What is an Intensive and why do them?
An intensive is a series of NeuroMovement lessons done in a short amount of time. Typically, they consist of two lessons per day, and vary from three to five days in duration. The reason to do intensives is simple. It's the best format to drive changes quickly. Think of language immersion programs; it's the same concept. The greater number of lessons and their proximity in time allow the student and practitioner to build and expand on what was just learned. The amount of learning that can happen in, e.g., a series of 8 lessons in 4 days, is exponentially greater than with the same number of lessons spread out over several weeks.
For the success of the intensive, it is important to allow for plenty of time to rest between sessions and refrain from other therapies or demanding activities on the same days.
How often should I do Intensives?
There is no definitive answer to this question. It will be different for each individual depending on their condition, goals, work and school schedules, and budget. For an adult who more recently experienced a stroke or is recovering from a major surgery, it may be useful to start with monthly intensives and then cut back to 2 lessons every other week for some time. For an infant, I may recommend doing 4-5 day intensives every six weeks for several months. Once mobility and awareness improve, and we see for example that the child is generating more variation on their own, and there is ongoing progress in learning and development, the number of lessons and frequency of intensives can be reduced. Parents and individuals can support the learning process by using some of the home programs and applying the Nine Essentials in daily life.
Intensives in two Locations
I'm offering NeuroMovement intensives in Ojai and Los Angeles.
In Ojai - my home base - the scheduling is a bit more flexible, and you have the option of coming to my house for the lessons or requesting home visits. Intensives are available almost every month. The area is beautiful and peaceful — a perfect place for a personal retreat or a family vacation.
Every two or three months, depending on demand, I offer a 5-day intensive in Los Angeles. You can choose between one or two lessons per day. At each intensive I have room for four or five families or individuals. The location is the Hilton Garden Inn in Marina del Rey (near LAX and Venice Beach). Since the space is limited it’s a good idea to plan in advance.
Mini-Intensives
For clients who need a shorter option, I also offer mini-intensives such as 4 lessons over a weekend. I hope to make lessons more accessible that way for clients coming from Los Angeles and other locations without having to take time off from work to get lessons. If you would like to do a longer intensive, you could just schedule two weekend intensives in a row.
