Movement Explorations FS & TML

Movement is life; without movement life is unthinkable.
— Moshe Feldenkrais

Two Modalities

There are two different ways of guiding our students in a NeuroMovement lesson, through gentle touch or verbally. In private lessons we often use a combination of both and in group classes verbal instructions to invite the students to explore.

Functional Synthesis® (FS) - Hands-On Sessions

Functional Synthesis (FS) sessions are gentle, hands-on lessons that use touch, movement, and awareness to communicate directly with the brain. Each session is individually tailored to the client’s unique needs, interests, and goals.

The work is subtle and refined—movements are often small, and to an observer it may look as if little is happening. Yet for the person receiving the lesson, the experience can be rich, revealing new sensations, connections, and possibilities for change.

Through these explorations, clients often notice improvements on many levels—physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. Many leave a session feeling calmer, lighter, and more integrated, with a clearer sense of themselves and their movements.

Typical session length: about 45 minutes.

Transformational Movement Lessons® (TML) - Verbally Guided Explorations

Moshe Feldenkrais created hundreds of movement lessons, which he called Awareness Through Movement®. In the Anat Baniel Method® NeuroMovement®, we refer to these verbally guided explorations as Transformational Movement Lessons® (TMLs). Transformation through awareness, using movement as the tool.

Each lesson explores functional movements from different positions—lying down, sitting, or standing. They often begin with a simple movement that gradually evolves into more complex variations. Returning to the initial movement at the end allows you to sense and appreciate changes in quality—greater ease, clarity, and elegance.

At times, a lesson may start with a movement that seems impossible. By stepping back and approaching it in small, manageable parts, you discover new ways of organizing yourself. Eventually, what once felt out of reach becomes possible—or at least much closer.

The real benefit of this process lies not in the final achievement but in the learning that happens along the way. Each new distinction you notice gives your brain the information it needs to create new options, refine coordination, and move with greater efficiency and comfort.

TMLs can be experienced in private sessions, in group classes, or through guided home programs.

What People Say

  • "After several months of NeuroMovement classes and some one-on-one sessions, the pain in my neck is reduced by at least 75% and I haven't had a migraine headache for months. My posture has completely changed, and I have a much higher energy level and brighter outlook for the future."

Janet A. (active senior, yoga student)

  • "There are so many changes in my proprioception: The stability in my walking is amazing to me. I'm certain it's coming from the new awareness of my right foot- particularly the bone that runs down the right side of my foot. It was more present then it has been since my hemorrhage."

Colette F. (brain hemorrage 4 years ago)

  • "He is much calmer, less impulsive, less aggressive, more reasonable, more affectionate. There is still room for much improvement but there are clear changes and everyone is very happy."

Mitra S. (mom of 4 year-old with autism)
